FAQ
Actually he WAS paralyzed. At least his kick drum foot was. Immediately I saw the reason for his anguish. The Ayotte kit previously had an impact pad mounted at the beater contact point. Someone removed it leaving behind lot's of adhesive residue. Normally this wouldn't be a problem with my felt beater. When Mr. Faye took the set he changed out the beater with his own sporting a flat nylon beater. Instantly upon impact Johnny's beater welded itself to the bass drum head and wouldn't budge. So now we have 20,000 people chanting with Gord but Johnny was "kickless" at the start of Little Bones....or was it "Twist My Arm"? I don't know. How old am I? It was 1992.

Now what?? Change out his pedal? Change out his beater with a drum wrench? in front of 20,000 with Mr. Much Music camera guy hovering over him? No time for that so I ran back to Wayne's World & grabbed my WD 40. I lied down onstage between the camera man's legs and under Johnny's floor tom spraying WD 40 on his bass drum head keeping Johnny's pedal working. With nothing else to do I watched the audience through his bass drum head while he played. The camera man stood over me. It was the best Tragically Hip concert I was ever at & I had the best seat on the stage. Really glad I was wearing my camera....ITWM

For me it wasn't until The Tragically Hip went on that the real trouble started...
